Who is a Montessori teacher?

A Montessori teacher is an individual, who has successfully undergone a course in Montessori teachers training, to enable him/her to help in children's growth towards a social and independent life, one who creates an environment that is calm, safe, and friendly and that supports a child in the developmental stage, one who helps a child to grow and learn at his own pace and also realize his/her capabilities. He or she is the one who gives enchanting presentations, with the help of Montessori equipment, to stimulate the learning environment. This training is not only essential to practice in different institutions, but also to excel in this field.

What is the Montessori training method like?

Montessori school children can be classified into basically three age groups, namely zero to three, 3 to 6 years, and 6 to 12 years and as such there are three levels of training that are essential to be provided to candidates to enable them to enhance the social and individual responsibilities of the child.

These three levels are:

Montessori Assistants to Infancy - This training course is meant for candidates who want to become Montessori teachers to teach children who are infants in the zero to three years age group. In this course, candidates are taught the Montessori theory of human development as also lessons in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, hygiene, obstetrics, child neuropsychiatry, and development of movement, development of language, music, spiritual development, and art.

Primary - This training course is meant for candidates who want to become Montessori teachers to teach and help children in the 3 to 6 years age group. Here social development, language, and movement of children are the primary areas of focus of teaching. Mathematical skills, which a child requires, are also taught in this training level. Apart from this music, art, history, biology, and geography are some of the subject that are introduced to a candidate, so prospective teachers are taught the basics of these subjects.

Elementary - This training course is meant for candidates who want to become Montessori teachers to teach students in the 6 to 12 years age group. Here, candidates are taught that, rather than memorizing everything, children should use their reasoning power and intellect and through group activities study subjects such as mathematics, history, science, language, art, music, geography, and other subjects.

What are the eligibility criteria for enrollment in such training programs?

Generally, a person should have a graduate degree to be eligible to apply.

What is the duration of this Montessori teachers training?

The training can be completed in two formats. The first format of the full-time program starts in September and ends in June. The second format of the full-time program can be concluded over two summers for the infant level course and over three summers for the primary and elementary level courses.
